and maybe you don’t need anyone. (a poem)

after a while you realize that
thought catalog
only catalogs
the same thoughts
over and over again
so you stop submitting
and you stop reading
because after a while
you learn
that it doesn’t matter.

after a while you realize that
the sweater you loved (just) yesterday
is a sweater you only feel
quite so-so about
and so you discard it,
without any explanation,
and
even though it was
through no fault of the sweater’s,
you make him feel bad
because you can.

after a while you learn that
there are certain key words you
need only utter in
order to get free drinks
so you tighten your purse
and let loose your dignity
for those free shots of tequila
that
make it all ok.

after a while you realize that
people who say they won’t leave you
are the people you leave behind
because the only things worth having are
the things you can’t have.
and after a while, you learn
that the gardens you planted
don’t need seeds to grow
because the pond that you’re trapped in,
has no sun.
